Five Frames: Cape Ann on Film

For every roll of film I shoot, I find I fall in love with a handful. In fact, sometimes I think I “like” a more of my film images than my digital ones, more photos I consider “keepers.” Why? Perhaps I’m more intentional. With a limited number of frames, I find I’m less likely to snap away. I’m more mindful of composition. I slow down. And days later, when the images come back, I’m often pleasantly surprised.

This summer, while spending the day in the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts, I brought along my small Olympus XA2, a simple point-and-shoot camera with three-zone focusing. While I also own the rangefinder style XA, I often reach for the XA2 instead, as I prefer the absolute simplicity of the XA2—light leaks and all!
