2024 Road Trip on Film: Part II (120)

This post is the second part of my favorite film photos from our 2024 summer road trip (you can check out Part I here). Along with my Olympus OM2n 35mm camera, I packed a medium format camera on the trip—my Hasselblad 500 CM with the Carl Zeiss Planar 80mm f/2.8 lens. I bought this particular camera back in the fall, and so far, I’ve been thrilled with every roll I’ve run through—there truly is something magical about this kit, and while it’s WAY more camera than I’ll ever need (and probably deserve!!), I absolutely love it. The Hasselblad is my first and only medium format camera, and I love the way it forces me to think differently and, as a result, photograph differently. Have I mastered it? Not at all—but I’m loving the learning. And damn, how I love the sound of that shutter!

Whereas I used only Kodak Gold 200 with my Olympus, I used a few different film stocks with the Hasselblad—and having a second film back made switching between stocks SO much easier!

Notes on camera/film/developing:
Camera: Hasselblad 500 CM (late model) and A12 film back purchased from KEH (both rated: EX+)
Lens: Carl Zeiss 80mm f/2.8 Planar CF T* lens purchased from KEH (rating: EX)
Other: Additional A12 film back purchased from KEH (rating: EX)
Film stocks: Kodak Ektar 100, Kodak Portra 400, Kodak Gold 200. I typically purchase all my film either through B&H or through a nearby camera shop. I love that I can buy 5-packs through B&H.
Developing: I use a local (about 45 mins away) camera shop in Dover, NH: Photosmith (Old School Photo Lab). I love the convenience of a local shop, dropping off film in person, and getting to know the folks in the shop. Sure, there are other options, but in my opinion, there’s something to be said for building a relationship with a local lab, if you’re lucky enough to have one!
