Up North

This weekend, Gavin and I decided to take a spontaneous trip up to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. When Gavin booked the weekend while I was traveling a few days (weeks?) ago, we had originally hoped for a bit of deeper snow so we could snowshoe some trails and take our cameras out. Neither of us had imagined we’d lose so much of our snow with recent temps in the 40s. Ah, March.

After we checked in late this afternoon, I snapped a few photos. Still, even without a ton of snow, the views were fantastic. I mean, the Whites aren’t the Rockies or the Sierra Nevada, but they’re ours. Even as a non-downhill skier and non-hiker (I prefer cross-country and walking!), I can appreciate the snowcapped peaks and the small mountain towns here in New Hampshire. Tomorrow, maybe we’ll check out some trails. For today, just a few shots in the late afternoon light.

As I scrolled through photos and thought about what I might write tonight, I realize how grateful for the role creativity plays in my life and the gift it’s been. Whereas I had always sought refuge in words and in images, adding visual art to the mix has given me a new area of focus. Somewhere in the combination of all three—writing, photography, and visual art—I am finding my truest self. Each day, regardless of how I’m feeling or what I’m thinking, I know that the day will include those three elements. For now, it’s enough.
